I’ve struggled for years, and I’m slowly falling back into the same darkness. It leaves for a while, but always creeps back in. Idk what to do. I’m so lost. I’ve tried to reach out to friends and family but it never helps. I have bipolar disorder, and OCD and I don’t do well when I’m overwhelmed. I put myself in this position and I feel so stupid. The last few years have been so painful, and I’ve worked so hard to pull through only to end up here again sharing my bed with this demon. I’m so mentally exhausted from fighting it. It seems like no matter what I do in life, it’s the wrong decision. I wanted to put my story here. Idk why, maybe it’ll help someone. Maybe I just need to vent and reflect. When I was 18 I joined the Air Force, it had been my life long dream. My parents and my family were so proud of me. I was proud of myself. I excelled through basic and AIT, was progressing at my first duty station, and then I got medically discharged. I was heart broken. I remember coming back home from Korea and watching my family take down my banner off the wall in town where people put stuff for the service members. I remember the awkward explanations id have to give when people asked what happened and my family just put their head down. It broke me, and led me to my only true suicide attempt. It failed, and I was left lost. I went to eat at a restaurant, and ended up being offered a job that day after chatting with the boss about sports. That job saved my life. I loved that job. It was my escape from reality. I ended up becoming a bartender and found my passion. But nobody was ever proud of me. My sisters a nurse, my cousin has 2 degrees, one plays college football, and there I was, a 26 year old bartender. I met my ex wife at that bar. We got married in 2016, and it wasn’t the best relationship. I had a lot of issues I was working through, and wasn’t ready to be the man she needed. I wasn’t mature enough for marriage, and still had some growing up to do. Shortly after we got married, I found out about somethings that happened prior to us being married and I couldn’t live with it. I blamed myself for it. I wasn’t ready to face that the man I was at the time in some ways forced her to cheat. I should have helped more, done more, shown more attention. I lost everything in that divorce, my best friend, my dogs, my house. When we separated, I met someone who I clicked with instantly. It was amazing how close we were able to become so quickly. She ended up getting engaged on my front porch a month after dating to her ex. I vowed to give life my best shot, and if I failed again, I’d end it all. When we went on quarantine i fell into a deep depression again, but I started running again for the first tine since my Air Force days, started lifting weights again, and I ended up losing 60 pounds and getting back to my military weight, I bought my dream car, and was slowly pulling myself out of it. I felt a glimmer of hope, I felt like the old me again. When we went back to work, I was making the best money I had ever made bartending. I was able to save, get ahead, live stress free. I got my own place, was trying so hard, but still, nobody was proud of me. Idk why I seek validation so much from my parents, but I just wanted them to be proud of me. I felt great about how I looked, who I was, and what I was doing. But the old habits of trying to please my family crept back in. A management position game available at a restaurant that I used to help with, and I took it. My parents were finally proud of me, so I guess that’s good. But now I lay here regretting it all. I work more hours than I used to but make less money. I was rushed into moving Bc it was a 1.5 hour commute from my old house and it was wearing me down. I took an apartment that I can barley afford. After bills are paid I have like 100 dollars left for gas and food for the month. I’m dwindling down my savings I built up. I don’t have the happy interactions anymore that kept me going on my bad days. I miss my regulars. I miss being happy. I can barely afford to live. I tried reaching out to my parents for advice but it went about as well as I thought it would. They haven’t ever understood me or my illness. I don’t do well when overwhelmed and I’m pushed to the brink. I can’t sustain, I don’t think I can go back down to bartending and take a demotion. I’m lost. I had it all right for once and I fucked it all up trying to make others proud. I want to die. I just want the old me back, the person I built up these last few months. I worked so hard, and I truly gave it my best shot but I’m an idiot and I screwed it up again. Idk what to do, but the only way I see out is death. I don’t think I can go back, but I don’t want to go forward either. Idk what to do. But I just wanted someone to listen, and if I leave this world, I want anyone reading this to know that you should do what makes you happy always and hold on to it no matter what anyone thinks, because when you lose that, there isn’t much left to hold onto. I haven’t felt this way since my first attempt. It’s so scary after trying so hard and still wanting to be dead.

Hey everyone!!
I'm using the TestMasters course for study preparation and the program offers supplemental Diagnostic Tests (released tests ranging from 2010 to 2019). I was wondering:
1) how these numbers coincide with references to "PT 86" or "PTs in the 60s, 70s, etc." - i'm assuming the higher the PT number, the more recent the test was given based on month/year?
2) whether one would recommend studying from the earlier dates (I'm currently at year 2014) and going through the November 2019 test; or going from 2019 and down.
3) if there is a general consensus that the Flex exam will reflect certain years more than others
4) if I should invest in getting the PrepPlus on LSAC or whatever it's called, or using some other platform like 7sage for more PTs

2020.09.28 05:32 palatinduge I have had to make sacrifices and just as I finally felt truly confident to take on the world, COVID-19 ruined my hopes and dreams.

tl;dr: COVID 19 made my plans to move out and enjoy freedom as an adult more difficult so I am still in my idiot overbearing parents' house and the pandemic made my dating prospects worse.
Of course I am not the only whose been negatively affected by COVID19 pandemic and some people have been worse affected, but I just went to vent my frustrations.
For four years since I graduated my degree, I have had difficulty finding a good job. To cut the long story, compounded by my overbearing parents who prevented me from developing life skills to handle the real world, and with my admittedly own unsureness on what I truly want to do, I have had to make sacrifices over the past couple of years. Luckily, I finally got a job that is tangent to my degree just two weeks ago. Even though it is a stepping stone to a position that I truly want, I enjoy my new job and I can't really complain.
However, I can't help but feel frustrated of the missed opportunities thanks to this fucking pandemic. My dream jobs have either been withdrawn from the job market or I have been turned down as employers preferred candidates who are locals. I have been wanting to move out of town and start over to a new city so that I could get better perspective and new experience but nope, life threw a shitter called COVID-19. And this plays well into the hands of my overbearing, clingy moron of a parents. They're my parents and they grew up in differently and didn't know better, but there is only so much anyone could tolerate from the stereotypical uptight, always-playing-safe, conservative Asian parents. At the very least with my new job, I could hopefully and reasonably move out even though, where I live, we're undergoing housing crisis in addition to the pandemic.
I didn't openly tell my parents that I want to move out as they fucking map and plan again my life on how I should do by playing safe. I have developed psychological instinct to dismiss them whenever they make unsolicited suggestions or dictations to how I should do things-- regardless of whether they're right or wrong. I actually grew more as a person listening to them less than before and by making mistakes on my own. Yes, I am well aware that I wouldn't "save more" financially if I move out of home but fuck that staying in the comfort zone mentality; part of being adult is to face challenges. I have always been the person who is a trailblazer but I have been too long on my parents shadows and I am sick of it (I have schadenfreude that they're regretting their parenting style now that they're in their 60's. And my mother who keeps teaching us to play safe to actively avoid regret She would say "regret is always at the end" and ironically she now regrets not really teaching us life skills as my brothers are jobless and scared of the real world). And it isn't like I am frivolous at all-- unlike my deadbeat father who always spent his earnings on gambling and causing us financial burden and family shame for stealing and having not gotten a job for ten years since then, and yet he still acts like he is the best father in the world (growing up in religiously conservative countries that stifle critical thinking, I guess ignorance is truly a bliss).
It is also frustrating that just as I am ready to get back into the dating game, boom COVID-19. I don't know whether women are just reluctant in general to go out dating because of the pandemic, or I maybe because I am Asian and of course there is still discrimination and racism against Asians thanks to the pandemic. It is my first time using dating sites and it is not that I have high expectations in using those sites, but it is already hard for Asian men to get dates in general and here comes COVID-19 making things even harder. I also don't appreciate that on dating sites, I see people whom I don't want to see; and I wouldn't appreciate that this certain someone whom I don't want to see ever again might pop up. In my town, it is small and everyone knows each other so rumours spread around easily like virus (sorry I just had to make this pun). It's one of the reasons why I want to move out of town and I have only now recently truly understood why my friend became more recluse and moved out of country even.
I want to turn over a new leaf and start somewhere fresh. And just as I am getting out, the morons pull me back in. I have grown up being drilled into my head by media, school and adults that if you work hard enough and have the will, you can achieve anything. I still believe in it and I never am a complete free will advocate. I am still a compatibilist but I am now more convinced that life is run 65% by determinism. The trick is gracefully accepting the difficulty and learning how to get around the pile of shit that life threw in front of you.

1-So Marinette claims to not have feelings for Adrien anymore, but both Alya and Nino know this to be untrue, and on top of that, both Aeon and Jessica notice right off the bat that she loves him. On thee other hand, Adrien and Kagami seem to be dating. But at the same time, it's clear that it's a one-sided relationship (It's clear that Kagami loves Adrien, but it's fairly obvious the opposite is not true) So... what do you think will happen? I wouldn't be surprised if by the end of the series, Adrinette is a thing, but when will it happen? Or at least, when will the inevitable Adrigami couple break up happen? My guess is that it'll happen sometime in late season 4.
2-Now that Hawk Moth know the identities of the Fox, Snake, Horse, Monkey and Turtle miraculouses holders (Seeing as he already know about the Dragon and Bee holders) Do you think we'll ever see Pegasus, Viperion, Carapace, Rena Rouge and King Monkey, outside of a (I guess) inevitable final battle where we see all or most of the holders? Also, do you think we'll ever see Queen bee again, or Chloée's betrayal was the last straw for LB and CN?
3-Regardless of the answer to the question above, do you think we'll see new super heroes? Wether it's the same people as season 2/ using new miraculouses, or flat out new super heroes? And do you think we'll see other villainous miraculous holders? The ending of the New York Special made it clear that not all Miraculous are known or found, so that definitely leaves the opportunity for new miraculous holders, both good and bad to appear.
4-Do you think the main cast of the New York Special (especially Jessicca, since she's now a miraculous holder) ever reappear in main episodes?
5-In Timetagger, the titular villain mentioned that in the future (and judging by Adult Alix's apparent age, I'm guessing she and Timetagger comes from about 7 to 10 years in the future) that the Hawk Moth of the future is a different miraculous holder. Who do you think it'll be? The only (ATM) person I can see becoming the next HM would be Lila, or Nathalie (Given that she wants Gabriel to acheive his goal at all cost, it could be something like Gabriel gave up and Nathalie still went on with the plan)
6-This is more speculation or idea than a question: But I personally hope that somehow, by the end of the series, Gabriel/Hawk Moth will become a good guy or at least an anti-hero, fighting alongside (or helping at a distance) the heroes againts a greater evil (Like the would-be Hawk Moth successor).
7-Last one, I swear: I think I heard that season 5 would be the last Miraculous season (unless the show is so sucessful they continue on, I guess) But I think it shouldn't end with a regular episode. I think it should end with a movie. Like season 5 ends with shit going down, and then we get a 60-90 minute movie as the final where LB and CN (alongside other heroes) solve whatever shit went down. Do you like this idea?

Now not much more is known about Sellustius Lucallius beyond him having likely been a consul, aswell as a client king before being executed in 85 AD when the Roman empire began doing away with their client kings in favour of more direct ownership of British lands.
Also if you find it unbelievable that a Gaelic speaking Celt named Marius might have a Latinised name of "Sallustius Lucullus", then i will leave a photo of the Roman emperor Caligula.

Now, if you have read my previous article, and you still have doubts about them being the same person, then know, that everything i have said, is pretty much now accepted as a contemporary theory amongst contemporary historians and scholars, as confirmed confirmed below.
But, from now on, i will use the name Marius to remain consistant with popular opinion.
Sallustius Lucullus
A second theory was proposed by Dr. Miles Russell of Bournemouth University. An inscription from Chichester, recorded by Samuel Woodford in his Inscriptionum Romano-Britannicarum Conllectio (1658) but since lost, refers to Sallustius Lucullus, giving his praenomen as Gaius and describing him as a propraetorian legate of the emperor Domitian. Another inscription from Chichester, discovered in 1923, refers to a "Lucullus, son of Amminus". Russell argues that this is the same Lucullus, and that his father was the native British prince Amminus, son of Cunobelinus, who fled to Rome c. 40.

Now Marius would have been at his prime just around the time of the Boudica revolt in 60 AD.

Of course, the uprising was caused by the Roman empire trying to take ownership of the kingdoms and lands.
They were previously self governing provences that had good trade relations with Rome.
But when Boudiceas husband died, his will was ignored by the emperor, who done the same to Boudica as he was doing to other client kings and queens, and he took Boudicas kingdom from her.
According to Tacitus, he also turned her in to a slave, and she and her daughters also raped.

Boudica and her Iceni tribe led an uprising which almost removed the Roman empire from Britain, by destroying Roman Britains most important settlements.

In AD 60 or 61, when the Roman governor Gaius Suetonius Paulinus was campaigning on the island of Mona (modern Anglesey) on the northwest coast of Wales, Boudica led the Iceni, the Trinovantes, and others in revolt.[6] They destroyed Camulodunum (modern Colchester), earlier the capital of the Trinovantes but at that time a colonia), a settlement for discharged Roman soldiers and site of a temple to the former Emperor Claudius. Upon hearing of the revolt, Suetonius hurried to Londinium (modern London), the 20-year-old commercial settlement that was the rebels' next target. He lacked sufficient numbers to defend the settlement, and he evacuated and abandoned Londinium. Boudica led a very large army of Iceni, Trinovantes, and others against a detachment of Legio IX Hispana, defeating them, and burning Londinium and Verulamium.

Now, does it seem a bit unbelievable that one single warrior princess and her Iceni tribe could achieve all this?
Well what you have to remember, is the Gaelic language during this period, was spoken all over Gaul, and before the Roman conquests, Gaul was a very large area, taking in much of europe and beyond, as i revealed in my article "From Gaul to Galilee".
But Boudica was known throughout Gaul, in many different Gaulish/Gaelic dialects, suggesting she was well connected.

The Gaulish version is attested in inscriptions as Boudiga in Bordeaux, Boudica in Lusitania, and Bodicca in Algeria.[13]

Sallustius Lucullus is thought to have been part of Roman attempts of expansion in to Albany/Caledonia/Scotland, and he allied himself with Agricola during Agricolas conquest of Caledonia attempt, just before his execution.

Archaeology can tell us something of Roman military activity in the years following Agricola's recall in 84. Sallustius (or his unknown predecessor, if one existed) may have attempted to consolidate Agricola's victories in Scotland by building the Glen Forts which Peter Salway dates to his rule. Forts at Ardoch and Dalswinton in southern Scotland, which Agricola had built, were extensively rebuilt in the late 80s and evidence of improvements of other military installations in the region points to a strong presence in the Scots Lowlands.

And the client kingdom that Marius ruled, would appear to have been the equivalent of todays Northumbria, and Scotland.
He was likely the de-facto king of Albany, though possibly not recognised by Picts, Scots and Gaels as such.

According to Geoffrey, he ruled wisely in the time when the Picts first arrived in Britain. A fleet of ships under the leadership of Sodric came from Scythia and landed in Albany. Once there, they began to destroy the lands and Marius was forced to react. Following numerous battles, Marius killed Sodric and set up a stone there to remember that triumph. In addition, that land became known as Westmorland after him.

And as you may have read in the above quote, it is believed by Geoffrey that Marius was attacked by Picts that arrived in Albany from Scythia.
And as has already been established in previous articles, Scythia was an area in Eurasia that was led by the aristocratic Royal Scoloti.
It is also hardly surprising that there are Gaels fleeing to Albany, as Scythia is also coming under Roman attack, during this period.

Now, it just so happens, in Irish legends, around this "exact same period", an Irish high king named Tuathal Techtmar was brought up in Albany/Caledonia which was his Mothers original homeland before she moved to Ireland to marry the high king of Ireland, who got overthrown, causing her to return to Albany.
However Tuathal Techtmar ended up returning to Ireland at around the age of 20 years, and fought a war to reclaim the throne of Irish high king.
He would also have been an enemy of Marius one would assume, as Marius appears to be trying to appear as the Roman client king of Albany, and Tuathal Techtmar is also of indigenous Albion kingship.

Later versions of the story suppress the involvement of the provincial nobility in the revolt, making the "subject peoples" the peasants of Ireland. The Lebor Gabála Érenn[6] adds the detail of Túathal's exile. His mother, Eithne Imgel, daughter of the king of Alba (originally meaning Britain, later Scotland), was pregnant when Fíachu was overthrown, and fled to her homeland where she gave birth to Túathal. Twenty years later Túathal and his mother returned to Ireland, joined up with Fiacha Cassán and Findmall, and marched on Tara to take the kingship.

Now, obviously Tuathal Techtmar did not just walk in to Ireland and get the vote of the people.
He obviously had an army that followed him to Ireland and fought for his return, and he is attributed to have fought very hard for this.

Túathal fought 25 battles against Ulster, 25 against Leinster, 25 against Connacht and 35 against Munster. The whole country subdued, he convened a conference at Tara, where he established laws and annexed territory from each of the four provinces to create the central province of Míde (Meath)) around Tara as the High King's territory. He built four fortresses in Meath: Tlachtga, where the druids sacrificed on the eve of Samhain, on land taken from Munster; Uisneach, where the festival of Beltaine was celebrated, on land from Connacht; Tailtiu, where Lughnasadh was celebrated, on land from Ulster; and Tara, on land from Leinster.

Now, Ireland was most likely already a Gaelic speaking country.
But legends state that during the invasion of Tuathal Techtmar, the current day Irish gaelic language emerged.
In fact, the legends even express a belief that the invasion of Tuathal Techtmar was a complete foreign invasion from start to finish, by foreigners.
Therefore, i think scholar T.F.O'Rahily is mistaken when he says that Irish legends are rehashing earlier return exile stories.
Whilst there were earlier invasions, i think there is plenty evidence to suggest that the invasion being discussed here, is an entirely different invasion to one that may have happened in the 1st or 2nd century BC.
The invasionbeing spoken about, and the language spoken by the invaders, was probably the form of Gaelic spoken by the Scythian based Gaels which first invaded Albany, before moving on to Ireland..
They perhaps did not even speak the same dialect of Gaelic as other Picts in other regions that have evolved in an ever so slight different direction.

O'Rahilly suggested that, as in many such "returned exile" stories, Túathal represented an entirely foreign invasion which established a dynasty in Ireland, whose dynastic propagandists fabricated an Irish origin for him to give him some spurious legitimacy. Contemporary historians and scholars tend to actually believe that Tuathals campaign was supported by the Romans to have a friendly king that will put a stop to the Irish raids happening on mainland Britain, as well as of course for other future possibilities and obvious reasons.

It is possible that the Romans may have given support to Túathal, or someone like him, to regain his throne in the interests of having a friendly neighbour who could restrain Irish raiding.[5][11] The 2nd-century Roman poet Juvenal, who may have served in Britain under Agricola, wrote that "arms had been taken beyond the shores of Ireland",[12] and the coincidence of dates is striking.

It sounds like the uprising was a lot bigger and more co-ordinated than simply one she-wolf.
It probably included Irish raiders, and even Picts from afar afield as Scythia.
It would all have been part of the war against the Roman empire.
As for the case with the Picts.
It sounds like Agricola gave them refuge from Marius most likely.
May have even used the inhumane way that Marius was treating them as justification for executing him, thus removing yet another client king, at the same time as gaining an allied army to invade and conquer Ireland.
Though, if this was the reason, then it was all fruitless, as no conquest of Ireland would ever be followed through by the Romans.

How to become less picky ?
I feel like when it comes to online dating I’m super picky . I get decent matches (I’ve had over 60 conversation on hinge in less than two months), but I’ve only gone out with one guy.
I always end up not responding to a guy’s answer if I realize we aren’t going to click with lifestyle , their responses are vague , or they wind up living in an area that is too far away from me(hinge isn’t as specifically on location- a city could be either be 20 minutes away or potentially an hour away from you because of how vague it is ). I’ve had friends online date and find someone within a couple of weeks , I just don’t know if I am being too picky or I have too many deal breakers .
Is anyone else picky like this ? Or do I need to become more flexible in my values . For reference , I’m on my 20s and I don’t party, so I feel like as an introvert I have to be more selective because I’m looking for a relationship, which a lot of guys of my age aren’t .

2020.09.28 01:40 Throwaway_Boy1 How should I (15m) deal with my drug using Mother?

This long but please read, it would mean a lot.
The last 6 years of my life have been eventful, and I'm not going to give you the full rundown but I will summarize. When I was around 10 my mom had a surgery where she was prescribed pain medication after. In the nicest way I can put it, the doctor who prescribed the medication was some dipshit who was just in it for the money. She got addicted, the doctor kept on prescribing and that went on for a year. After the doctor said no cause they didn't want to get caught, she went illegal while beginning to cheat on my dad. A whole bunch of lies came along with this obviously, and I had no idea what was going on at the time as I was too young.
She then started "dating", if that's what you wanna call it, this rich 60 year old while simultaneously draining my dad of all finances. Who was at first trying to get her help, then later fighting her in court. We ended up having to sell our house, I lost my college fund and so did my younger siblings. Luckily, we have 2 pairs of grandparents that did fine in life and we got to move in with 1 pair while seeing the other frequently. The divorce finalized a little while ago with her only being allowed to visit and everything began to settle down. I could list so many reasons how my mother has done me wrong but I won't, I simply believe that it isn't her.
When I was 13 I stopped talking to her after I had this foggy feeling in my head while also being tired all the time. (Thank god that went away when she moved out, the doctors tested me for some diseases but they were no help.) I was forced to go to therapy at 14 for not talking to her which I promptly lied to get out of, just because I felt horrible that my dad had to pay more money for something I know he couldn't afford. I have been offered to go to therapy after which I also rejected. Part of the divorce agreement was I had to unblock her on my phone, I try to ignore her texts but sometimes I hope something changed and I read them.
My birthday is coming up and she sent me a text where she does her usual "I would do anything to make it better" "I don't know why dad did this" which I can ignore but, she also added how since I'm going to be able to drive soon she wants me to visit her and "talk things out" cause I'm old enough to choose to. Which is wrong for a couple of reasons: 1. She legally isn't allowed to see me on her own and 2. Why would I want to walk into a house where these shady ass people shoot up 24/7. I miss my mom but I don't know what to do, I have to meet her tomorrow for my birthday and I want to text her "That's stupid of you to text me, don't show up tomorrow" but I also don't want to make a big deal.
I still love the old her, and I would do anything to get her back. I guess part of me hopes this could be an opportunity to. Another part of me wants to bring this to my dad, but he will just tell me to ignore it. I'm tired of constantly having to deal with this in my head while pushing her away, what should I do?

Backstory(kinda):
Im gonna be honest, I'm only 14, but seeing as I'm the younger generation, I feel like I'd know more about this than him. We exchanged a few words recently, and it really hurt me. I know he's not trying to, but it really hurt to hear it from him. And no, I'm not trans, but I have nonbinary, ace, and trans friends, and I just love them so much. I'm also an open pan and closeted poly, and due to the interaction I'm really scared he won't be accepting of me being poly. Anyways, I'm gonna stop rambling and tell you about the exchange;

So the conversation starts with talking about Caitlyn Jenner, and M starts asking me stuff about trans people.
M: So if a a woman transitions into a man, and is dating a woman, is- Me: yes, that's still a straight relationship. (She asks me a few more like this) D: cutting in (I'm sorta paraphrasing) Ugh. It's all so stupid.
Everyone kinda went silent for a moment
D: all of these genders, and different identities are so dumb. There's too many. Can't we just have 5 or 6 or something like that. We don't need 60 of them.
This is when it really hurt. I started to think about my friends and I just looked away silently and started to cry to myself.
M notices and say something along the lines of "You really hurt her feelings, just so you know..."
I just kinda quietly stood up and walked away.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

One of my most accomplished former students is Stephanie Cobb, now the George and Sallie Cutchin Camp Professor of Bible in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Richmond. While doing her PhD at UNC, Stephanie became deeply interested in the accounts of martyrdom in early Christianity, leading to a dissertation with one of the best titles ever (it really does describe the book but it’s unusually clever): Dying to be Men: Gender and Language in Early Christian Martyr Texts.
Stephanie has become one of the leading experts in this field, backed up now with an intriguing and important second book on the martyr texts. It will be of particular interest to members of the blog and so I’ve asked Stephanie to make some guest posts about it. Here is the first.
Bart recently asked if I would be interested in writing a few posts about my latest book, Divine Deliverance: Pain and Painlessness in Early Christian Martyr Texts. But before diving into Divine Deliverance itself, I want to back up for a moment to talk a bit about what I love so much about early Christian martyr texts. I became fascinated by these (mostly 2nd and 3rd cen. ce) accounts in grad school. My first sustained study of them—Dying to be Men: Gender and Language in Early Christian Martyr Texts—looked at the ways martyr texts utilized gendered language to make arguments about Christian superiority over against pagans and Jews, on the one hand, and to dictate a normative gendered hierarchy within the Christian community, on the other hand. As I worked on this book, scouring the Greek and Latin texts carefully for gendered language and allusions, I stumbled upon another sort of language that I wasn’t expecting and that, to be honest, confounded me: over and over again, in a variety of different ways, these texts claimed that the martyrs did not feel pain when they were tortured!
And so, Divine Deliverance, at its core, asks a rather simple question: “Does martyrdom hurt?” The answer may seem so obvious as to make the question ridiculous. These texts talk about Christians being burned alive, thrown into the amphitheater to face gladiators or beasts, being hanged by their thumbs, and a wide assortment of other kinds of tortures that I’m fairly certain hurt a lot. The point of torture was to entice Christians to deny their faith and return to the traditional religions of the Roman empire. Pain was a judicial tool used by the Roman government. Pain not only worked to push individuals to deny their faith, since it was typically publicly inflicted, it served as a deterrent for others. Every tool in the prosecutors’ tool bag inflicted some sort of pain—whether psychological, physiological, or emotional. So, martyrdom must hurt.
Theologically speaking, moreover, the point of these narratives must surely be—right?—to communicate to audiences the details of the torture and execution of these exceptional Christians. For most of us, I think, the martyrs stand as exemplary individuals who withstood excruciating pain in order to faithfully witness to Jesus. (The term “martyr,” by the way means “to witness” in Greek; it is judicial language that Christians appropriated and eventually applied to those who testified in court and were executed for doing so.) When we hear about their travails, we might wince and wonder whether we have what it takes to do what they did. They are the superheroes of Christianity: they have powers that we can’t imagine having ourselves, and they use them to build up the faith. As the third-century North African Christian, Tertullian, famously said: “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.”
Indeed, it is precisely the detailed descriptions of the dissolution of bodies that has led scholars to the consensus that Christian authors of this period specifically focused on Christian suffering. This interest was part and parcel of a larger social movement—as Judith Perkins argues in her wonderful analysis of Christianity of this period in The Suffering Self: Pain and Narrative Representation in the Early Christian Era—that acknowledged, for the first time, bodies that feel pain and experience suffering. She calls this new cultural representation the “suffering self.” Authors of this period—Roman, Jewish, and Christian—began discussing in some detail the experiences of the suffering body: twisted ankles, intestinal distresses, fevers, disembowelment. Christian writings of the period, it could be argued, are all concerned—at some level—about persecution/prosecution, suffering, and their effects on the faith. Perkins rightly notes that stories of individuals in Christian literature have a social function much larger than communicating one person’s experience: they simultaneously describe the individual and social body. If the second century bishop, Ignatius, anticipated he would face “fire and cross, packs of beasts, dissections, divisions, scattering of bones, chopping up of limbs, grinding up of the entire body,” he was also describing what Christianity at large should expect. To be a Christian, Perkins argues, is to suffer.
Didn’t Jesus and Paul, after all, teach that their followers should expect rejection and suffering? In Matthew 5, Jesus tells his followers to pray for those who persecute them. They should expect, that is, to suffer. In Luke 14, Jesus teaches that only those who “take up the cross” are his disciples. In Mark 13, Jesus followers are told they will be hated by everyone. In Matthew 23, Jesus predicts that some of those listening to him will be crucified. Paul speaks often of his own imprisonment and torture. (2 Cor 11; 1 Thess 2; Rom 8; Gal 6). He recites this history as a way of authenticating his faith. As heirs of these texts and traditions, then, surely the martyr texts anticipate and value bodily suffering. It fulfills Jesus’ prophecies and, like Paul’s, differentiates true from false Christians. This understanding of Christian pain is not only biblical, though. Pope Benedict XVI taught that true Christian love entails suffering. “The cross,” he explained, “reminds us that there is no true love without suffering, there is no gift without pain.” (https://zenit.org/articles/benedict-xvi-no-suffering-no-love/) Christian identity—both individually and corporately—seems inextricably connected with bodily pain.
Does martyrdom hurt? Despite all that I’ve said above. Despite the sensibleness of these arguments and the obviousness of the answer “yes,” in Divine Deliverance I argue that the martyr texts reflect a very different approach to the question. These ancient discussions of Christian martyrdom reveal an abiding interest in the insensitivity of the Christian body during torture and martyrdom. Claims to painlessness are crucial to the texts’ work of (re-)defining Christianity in the ancient world: while Christians could not deny the reality that they were subject to state violence, they could argue that they were not ultimately vulnerable to its painful effects. Thus early Christian texts distinguish categories that modern readers tend to collapse: torture and suffering, injury and pain. The martyrs are tortured and injured but they do not experience suffering and pain. Texts produced between the second and fourth centuries reflect Christian communities’ interactions with their contemporaries—pagans, Jews, and other Christians—and the development of their belief systems. The martyr texts’ claims to impassibility (the martyrs’ inability to feel pain) and/or impassivity (the martyrs’ lack of response to pain) have repercussions not only for the power structures undergirding Roman violence but also for the development of Christology, ecclesiology, and eschatology. And that will be the subject of my next post.

How Could Torture Not Hurt?? Guest Post by Stephanie Cobb

Here now is the second of three posts by Stephanie Cobb on her recent book about early Christian accounts of the martyrs. As you’ll see, she makes some rather astonishing and counter-intuitive claims. But I think she’s completely right. This is fascinating material….

Stephanie Cobb’s most popular books are Dying to Be Men and Divine Deliverance.
In the previous post, I detailed the reasons martyr texts ought to focus on the suffering and pain of early Christians experiencing torture and being executed for their faith. I also, though, noted that despite those reasons, the texts exhibit an interest in protecting the Christian body from the experience of pain. In this post, we’ll look at some of the ways Christian authors accomplish their goals of illustrating Christian insensitivity to pain.
But first, a quick caveat: in my work, I focus on rhetoric and narrative—not history per se. That is, I am not arguing that torture does not hurt. In fact, I am certain that torture hurts and to deny that is a dangerous political/theological stance to take in the world in which we live. So I want to be crystal clear that I am not making a claim about historical bodies and their insensitivities to judicial torture. There are ways one could make these arguments (i.e., bodies go into shock, etc.) but those arguments go beyond the evidence given in the narratives themselves: they assume the historicity of the narrative account and then try to explain it physiologically. I think that is a rather backwards approach. Instead, I ask about how the rhetoric of painlessness works within the larger narrative world constructed within the martyr text: what does pain represent in the narrative world? What does rejection of pain mean in the narrative world? Who is acting effectively and whose actions are ineffective? By asking these questions—rather than those of history—I hope to get a sense of how these texts functioned for Christian communities in ways that go far beyond recording the death of an individual Christian.
So, turning to these early Christian texts, when we ask of them “Does martyrdom hurt?”, they answer back unequivocally: “no.” This assertion is ubiquitous: it is found in both Greek and Latin texts across the Roman Empire, in stories dating from the mid-second century into the fifth century and beyond. The martyr accounts portray the body being beaten, scraped, clawed, burned, and otherwise attacked, and they simultaneously deny that this injured Christian body feels pain. When the martyr Pamphilus, for instance, is hanged up and scraped with metal claws, he asserts, “I feel no pain” (Mart. Carp. B3.6). Rather than being defeated by torture, Blandina “was renewed by her confession, which resulted in recovery, rest, and insensitivity [analgesia]” (Lyons 1.18). Christian martyrs are—time and again—delivered from the pain of persecution. The thick descriptions of tortured bodies stand in tension with the texts’ claims that martyrs feel no pain.
Although the claims to painlessness are pervasive, they are not identical: while some stories assert impassibility—the inability to feel pain—others focus on the martyrs’ impassivity—their lack of response to torture. But in all cases, the narratives insist that Christian bodies are not fundamentally harmed by persecution. A number of texts, for example, explicitly deny the experience of pain in martyrdom. Some employ the language of “analgesia” or “anesthesia” in their descriptions of the martyrs’ experiences of torture, while others negate terms for pain. We have already seen two examples of this approach above: Pamphilus’s claims not to feel pain and Blandina’s experience of “analgesia” in response to torture. Eusebius offers a second example of Blandina’s insensitivity to pain later in the account: “after the whips, the animals, and the frying pan, finally, having been tossed into a net she was exposed to a bull, and being tossed a long time by the animal, she no longer felt what was happening” (Lyons 1.56). The fourth-century Christian poet, Prudentius, wrote about a martyr named Romanus whose persecutors were “laboring” and “panting” while torturing him, but he remained “at rest.” Romanus explains to his puzzled persecutors: “If you seek, prefect, to know the truth, all of this, all the mangling, is not painful” (Peri. 10.459-60). The prefect himself eventually concedes that Romanus’s “whole body has grown insensible” (10.582). These examples can be multiplied, of course, but I offer one last one that is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful lines in all of the martyr texts: it explains how one of Blandina’s Christian companions was also protected from the physical sensations of torture. The narrator writes, that Sanctus served as a “model for all the others that there is nothing fearful where the Father’s love is, nothing painful where Christ’s glory is” (Lyons 1.23).
While some texts make the bald claim that torture doesn’t hurt, other times the narratives offer slightly more nuanced arguments. In some cases, for example, an author distances the body from the mind/soul. So some anonymous martyrs described in the Martyrdom of Polycarp, “in the hour that they were being tortured . . . had traveled away from the flesh” (2.2). These Christians were “no longer humans but already angels” (2.3). Even before their physical deaths, the author claims, their souls had abandoned their bodies and were already enjoying the rewards of heaven. Similarly, in the Martyrdom of Montanus and Lucius, Cyprian promises Flavian that “the body does not feel this at all when the mind is entirely devoted to God” (21.4).
Yet another approach to Christian insensitivity to judicial pain invokes the reassuring presence of the divine with the martyrs. Pamfilus, for instance, insists: “I feel no pain because I have someone who strengthens me; one whom you are not able to see endures in me” (Mart. Carp. B3.6). In the Passion of Perpetua and Felicitas, Felicitas explains that she feels the pain of parturition but when she is in the arena, “another will be in me who will endure for me because I will be enduring for him” (15.6). When a group of martyrs was being torn to shreds by shells, the author of the Martyrdom of Polycarp explains that they were able to endure the torture in silence because “The Lord was standing near, speaking with them” (2.2).
Early Christian martyr texts make the general point of Christian insensitivity to pain in a number of other ways, as well. Sometimes the pain that is supposed to be experienced by the Christian is, instead, experienced by the persecutor in a kind of divine “I’m rubber, you’re glue” kind of exchange. Sometimes authors make a point to show Christians experience pain that relates to worldly attachments (children, parents, etc.), but they are insensitive to the dissolution of the body relating to martyrdom. And sometimes, the texts utilize gallows humor to insist on Christian invulnerability to pain. So, after examining the texts closely, the answer to my question “Does martyrdom hurt?” is a confounding, but nonetheless clear, “no.”
Having laid out the data given in the martyr texts relating to painlessness, it still remains for me to offer an explanation for it. Early Christians knew well how the events of the amphitheater went. They would have been familiar with the judicial system, its goals, its tools, and its outcomes. Pretty much anyone who has a body can imagine what being burned, stabbed, hanged might feel like—at least in part. The audiences of these early texts were no different. So why would the authors of these stories make such outlandish claims about Christian bodies? My last post will offer some ways of understanding the logic of this choice.

In my first two posts, I asked “Does martyrdom hurt?” and explored reasons why early Christian martyr texts might reasonably answer “yes!” but then detailed the ways in which these texts actually make the counterintuitive argument: “No! Martyrdom doesn’t hurt.” In this—my last—post on Divine Deliverance: Pain and Painlessness in Early Christian Martyr Texts, I want to explore a slightly different question: “Why doesn’t martyrdom hurt?”
To read a text and note the language it uses is the easy part of research. To explain why certain language is preferred by a particular author or across time and space—especially when it’s unexpected language—is not only the hard part of research, it’s also the part that makes it meaningful. In other words, not many people will care that martyr texts used language of analgesia and anesthesia; they may (I hope) care why. And so the rest of this post offers a few ways of contextualizing the claims I originally found so confounding.
  • Eschatological hopes. The discourse of painlessness would have been easily understood in terms of eschatological expectations. The martyr texts are apocalyptic texts in that they posit a dualistic worldview, anticipate the coming end of time, final judgment, and the eternal rewards of the faithful. But, at least for some of these authors, Christians enduring torture do not have to wait until the end of time to receive the benefits of their salvation. Rather, the texts suggest that the martyrs attain these rewards—at least in part—even before their deaths. That is, we may find in some of these narratives an assertion of a realized eschatology: for the martyrs, the benefits of future glory are translated into the present world.
Of particular import in this case are the beliefs about the resurrected and glorified body. The third century North African author, Tertullian, asserts that the resurrected flesh will be “impassible, inasmuch as it has been liberated by the Lord so that it is no longer possible for it to suffer” (Res. 57.13). The medieval historian Caroline Walker Bynum uses a beautiful phrase to explain this expectation: she suggests that a “sort of anesthesia of glory” might spill over from the “promised resurrection into the ravaged flesh of the arena” (The Resurrection of the Body in Western Christianity 200-1336, 45). Relevant to this promise is Revelation 21:4, which describes the New Jerusalem: in this glorified place, “death will be no more, morning and crying and distress/pain will be no more.” In the bodies of the martyrs, Satan has been defeated and through the martyrs’ impassibility, the kingdom of God has been realized.
  • Stoic discourses. Martyr texts—like so many other Christian texts in antiquity—draw on Stoic philosophy. Assertions of Christian disinterestedness in pain correspond with certain understandings of Stoic teachings. For Stoic philosophy, pain must be understood within the larger goal of living in accordance with nature. One must accept what one cannot change. The Stoic philosopher Epictetus, for instance, taught that we cannot change whether or not we are executed, but we can control how we react to execution: I can stop myself from groaning or crying out or wailing. Generally speaking, Stoics did not claim that the philosopher could overcome the sensation of pain altogether; rather, they argued for self-control in the face of pain. But there is evidence of certain misunderstandings of Stoic teachings on this exact point.
The Jewish Stoic author of 4 Maccabees is one case in point: he argues that “devout reason” masters the passions that stand in the way of manliness, namely: anger, fear, and pain (1.4). In relating the story of the elderly Jewish man Eleazar, the narrator explains that reason “masters external pain” (6.34). Similarly, a group of brothers who successfully resist the tyrant’s demands demonstrate that they were “complete masters of pain” (8.28). 4 Maccabees was known and used by early Christians, and so it would not be surprising for Christians, too, to associate reason with the ability to rise above the experience of bodily pain.
  • Judicial discourses. I mentioned in my last post that inflicting pain was central to the judicial system of the Roman empire. One way of understanding claims to Christian painlessness is to see it as a response to pagan claims to the efficacy of judicial torture. That is to say, both pagans and Christians used existing discourses to claim cultural capital for themselves and to deny that capital to their opponents.
Pagan authors cast Christians as stubborn members of politically threatening groups who, as such, were justly tortured and executed. These authors narrate the triumph of Roman power over lawless individuals who threaten the empire. Since, as we have already seen, judicial pain was inflicted publicly in order to serve as a deterrent to others, Christian rejection of the experience of pain was especially subversive. In their claims to Christian insensitivity to pain, the martyr texts upend the entire logic of the Roman judicial system: through these narratives, Christian audiences are taught that what appears to be happening is not what, in fact, happens. Christian martyr texts reject the premise that Rome can harm the bodies of the faithful.
By undermining the judicial theory of pain, the early Christian martyr texts destabilize the entire system that supports the social, political, and religious life of imperial Rome. The Roman persecutors are found to be wholly inept at achieving their two related goals: first, they cannot hurt the Christian body—no matter how much torture they apply—and second, their attempts to dissuade others from joining the Christian faith inevitably backfire. Far from being a deterrent, the martyr texts assert that public torture brings more people into the fold.
Even more important than what the texts teach us about the individual body, however, is the lesson this counter-discourse teaches about the social body. The martyr’s body is simultaneously individual and social: it illustrates the strengths and (potential) weaknesses of Christianity as a social phenomenon as much as it does those of any particular individual. As such the Christian body’s resistance to the power of Rome takes on even more meaning. If the persecution of Christianity had as its aim the destruction of the movement, the impenetrability of the individual body demonstrates the impenetrability of the social body. Rome can no more destroy Christianity as a whole than it can harm any one of its members.
Before ending my stint as guest blogger, I’d like to make one final point about the discourse of painlessness in early Christian martyr texts. I have come to believe that we misread these texts if we insist on their historicity or that they must have at least a veneer of historicity to them. In the contexts in which they were written—when Christians feared (rightly or not) that they might be caught up in Roman persecutions—these texts have much loftier aims than merely reciting the “facts” of a particular event. Rather, I now read these texts as nothing less than miracle stories. It is not the individual Christian martyr whose story is front and center. These narratives focus primarily on the work of God. In the moments when an individual would feel most alone, these authors insist that nothing could be further from the truth. Bodies that should be in pain are not because they have been divinely delivered from that experience. God is not absent when Christians are standing in the arena; God is there, suffering for them, protecting their bodies from the pain that inevitably results from physical torture. The Christian martyr texts are not interested in “real” bodies. They are telling the story of God’s interaction in and with his people. These texts teach us not to be deceived by what we see with our eyes. Rather, we must look with the eyes of faith to see that the Lord is standing by, strengthening the martyrs, comforting them, healing them, protecting them, and rewarding them. In the end, the martyr texts narrate the miracle of divine deliverance.

DISCLAIMER: sex work is legal in my country
The past 3 years have been very concerning for me. This is in large part due to the fact that I have gone on a massive spending spree seeing shitloads of sex workers. In 2017 and 2018 I spent a total of $NZ3,000 on sex workers. Initially it wasn't so bad, as I was spending $60-80 per week on an escort. However, beginning in late 2019 it begun to increase drastically and it became commonplace for me to spend $200 per head. I am now 25 and in my last semester of university. While I have extended family that have set aside $10,000 for me to cover my student loans, I am concerned whether this spending is going to gradually negatively impact me in years to come. Prior to Covid-19, I was on a supported living payment, earning money sporadically playing gigs as a musician with fees raging from $150-300, which I would set aside and not spend on SWs.
There are a number of factors that has led me to spending this ungodly amount of money on SWs:
  1. Sexual curiosity - being able to fuck certain types of women that I cannot/seldom find going out approaching to date/fuck women (Polynesian, black and large breasted women - that vast majority of women I approach tend to be white), as well as being curious about things such as sexual massage.
  2. Being very knitpicky with the types of women I want to date.
  3. Not generating a sufficient amount of interest from women that want to be involved in recurring sexual relationships.
  4. Being underwhelmed with online dating apps (I was permabanned from Tinder a few years ago).
  5. low prices were an initial excuse/rationale to go and fuck SWs.
I am adventurous, active, curious, study music, play music, like to spend time out of the house and I am gradually in the process of cultivating solid friendships. I have made a considerable, proactive effort to meet women and ask them out on dates. However, I feel that I am not achieving that optimum results I want - this has especially been compounded by Covid-19.
There are several financial incentives I have made over the past years to not see workers - including saving money to buy new headphones, shoes, driving lessons, gear, instruments etc. However, I have trouble maintaining this incentive and my sexual impulses and curiosity are getting the better of me.
I attempted to resolve this issue by opting instead to spend money on sex parties. The issues with this however arose. Prior to the first and second lockdowns in my country, sex parties were few and far between and off course they ceased during the lockdowns. Most of the swinger parties allowing single guys were either fully booked or were underwhelming and involved me awkwardly loitering around with the other single dudes.
I have attempted to resolve this repeatedly by diversifying my interests and broadening the types of activities I am doing within a given week, however I am unsure whether I am doing a enough in this regard. I am a very sexual person and a sex positive person at that, but it's probably likely that I have some blindspots. I did Skype coach back in 2016, but going on a strip club binge resulted in me haulting coaching. I have been on a good number of dates since then, but I only one of them has resulted in a friends with benefits type relationship. There have been good deal of casual encounters, happening sporadically - I had three in between the two lockdowns in June and July.
I think the core of the issue here stems from casually browsing listings for the "sake of curiosity". This has been almost a daily habit, if so a timewaster that has resulted in me spending hours finding the "best deal" and "the most alluring women who are either busty, 40+ or brown/black". I get psychologically attached to these listings and start developing fantasies of these sex workers advertising themselves. Is there a way I can withdraw from this activity that doesn't involve installing filtering apps (I have tried this and this doesn't work).
This hasn't been severely impacting my studies, but I feel that I really need to realign my financial properties and start saving.
There are several compromises I have experimented with:
  1. No spending over $100
  2. No booking than 1 booking a month.
  3. Go for sensual massage instead of sex.
  4. Only go to sex workers who are a) black/brown b) 40+ c) tall and curvy or d) busty - E cup+
Do you think it's a good idea to choose and stick with one of these options? Is it better for me to quit sex workers altogether?
I am serious about making a career out of music. However it's inevitable that at this point in time, that I would need to be making money outside of music in order to move out of my parent's place and buying and maintaining gear. Is living with parents and living off a job seeker's benefits detrimental to moving forward beyond this? The problem I am encountering with employment is finding work that 1) adequately pays and 2) that I am qualified to do - many job vacant listings out there are specialized and require specialist qualifications and experience (i.e. retail, hospitality, education, painting, poster hanging, delivery etc). I am working on getting fully licenced to broaden my job opportunities.
There have been a few instances over the past few months where I have quit seeing SWs for up to a month: December of 2017, June of 2019 and April-May of 2020. But I need external help/guidance here.
